Welcome to the Home Cinema Systems page, home cinema systems are electronic audio devices that provide surround sound for television programmes or films that you are watching on the television. This surround sound adds hugely to the experience of watching films and you will hear sounds coming from all directions, for instance if in a film there is an airplane flying overhead you will actually hear the sound of the airplane pass through the room as it passes through the picture on the screen.
Home cinema systems consist of a main amplifier that also often includes a DVD player, 5 or more main speakers and a subwoofer. Most home cinema systems include a DVD player which will save you space and money and it also makes it easier to use as you will only have one remote control as apposed to two. The main speakers are usually small so they can be easily placed around the room, they do not need to be large as all of the bass sound is produced by the subwoofer which can be placed anywhere.
An important factor with home cinema systems is the type of surround sound that it uses, Dolby Digital is the most common and is also the standard used on DVD's and digital television. Dolby Digital is also often called Dolby Digital 5.1, the 5 indicates that it has five main speakers and the .1 tells you that it has a subwoofer, there are also versions of Dolby Digital with more than five speakers that such as 6.1 and 7.1. There are also some other types of surround sound such as DTS and Pro Logic II, DTS has a higher quality of sound than Dolby Digital but this takes up more room on the DVD so lots of film makers choose not to include DTS with their DVD's, the difference is also quite small as Dolby Digital still has a very high quality of sound.
