They use the standard stereo speakers that are included in the LCD television to produce the surround sound effect and do this by throwing the sound so that it sounds like it is coming from a different direction.
Having an LCD television with virtual surround sound is great as they take up less space and are cheaper than buying a home cinema system with surround sound speakers, the surround sound effect is however not as good as those offered by home cinema systems with Dolby Digital technology so if you want top quality surround sound then a home cinema system is the only option and they are quite cheap these days too.
